Raphaella a Persian/English/Scottish girl from North London has a profound and in-depth love of the great Persian Poets: Rumi, Hafez and Molavi, as well as the British Classics: Jane Austen, Shakespeare and the French Revolution.
From a young age a diverse mix of music enveloped her, surrounded by the Middle Eastern sounds of her fathers love of traditional Persian music to Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Carmen, Mahler and more that blasted out from her late Grandad’s Stained Glass Artist studio in Dorset –he was an avid record collector of 78's & Vinyl’s. Fuelling her interest in music and formerly classically trained in piano & violin during her school years, Raphaella graduated from University (Goldsmiths & The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance) in 2011 with a 1st class honours degree in Music.
There’s much anticipation for her eagerly awaited 2nd EP due for an early 2014 release from labels and management on both sides of the Atlantic. Working with high caliber multi-platinum producers and writers who are lining up to work with her, Raphaella has successfully been exploring the introduction of traditional Persian instruments into her sound both in recording and in her live set perfectly capturing her dual heritage which complements Raphaella’s beautiful, captivating and unique sound which consistently cuts through the noise of everyday life to speak straight to the heart. Those who have witnessed Raphaella live will agree that acoustically, sitting alone behind the piano or fronting her live band Raphaella's East meets West aura and vocal is her secret weapon.
Her artist career to date has seen her join line-ups with Texas, Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, The Rizzle Kicks, Stylo G, Lady Lykez, Clement Marfo And The Front Line, Lianne La Havas, etc. playing the major shows on the London scene, UK festivals and joining International superstar Chenoa at her Barcelona and Madrid tour dates.
Raphaella has been Music Week’s ‘Break Out Act’ and French NRJ12 program ‘Le Mag’ picked up her live acoustic online Reload Sessions of ‘Price Of Love’ calling her the revelation of 2013. She’s played the iconic Shark Stage at the London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics as one of the few selected artists by Emerging Icons & The Roundhouse and christened her red wellies in the mud playing The Secret Garden Party & Hop Farm festivals. Her original track ‘Above The Water’ is one of the songs to make the official 2012 accredited Olympic album ‘Album in the Park’ with Emerging Icons.’ Manoto TV has also featured Raphaella in a primetime documentary 'One day with Raphaella' introducing her to the Persian Diaspora and Middle East across the world.
2013 has seen Raphaella independently release her debut E.P. 'IDIOT' on her record label ‘Koochulu’ which means ‘Little’ – receiving great reviews from Vanity, Altsounds, Best In New Music, Amaze Pop, etc.
Invited to be a Roundhouse Associate Artist Raphaella has played at The Roundhouse (Camden) for the Music Week Awards, The UEFA Champions League Private Party & Roundhouse Access All Areas. While at University Raphaella was also selected to take part in the 30:30 EMI Roundhouse project (2010) and the ‘Unconvention: Album in a Day’ project where Raphaella was selected alongside Viv Albertine and Charli XCX to record her beautiful arrangement of the Clash’s iconic ‘I’m not Down’ live.
Signing a Publishing deal in April 2012 with respected UK independent Phrased Differently she’s been in great demand as a songwriter with collaborations with Afrojack, Ishi, Wytelabl, etc. and had many international cuts including K-Pop giants EXO, Afrojack, a certified Platinum record for Ivy Quainoo ‘The Voice’ winner of Germany, ‘The Voice’ winners of Holland, Korea and Bulgaria, Top five Albums for Spanish Artist Chenoa and Danish Artist Nabiha.
Raphaella is an Ambassador for the youth led charity ‘Kids Count UK‘ who works to alleviate suffering, poverty & issues facing children, young people and communities around the world.
Raphaella is currently taking the #iSTANDfor Anti-Bullying/Empowerment Campaign she’s devised with Kids Count into schools and Uni’s around the UK.
